Honey's shady activity exposed?
How the company reportedly dupes customers and content creators
Honey is reportedly a scam according to YouTuber MegaLag, who uploaded a video detailing how the company might be tricking customers and content creators.
Honey is a browser extension owned by PayPal that finds discount codes for online shops and applies them automatically at checkout.
Over the years, Honey has sponsored many prominent YouTubers such as Linus Tech Tips, Marcques Brownlee, and PewDiePie.
By attaching an affiliate link in YouTube video descriptions, customers can click on the link and purchase the respective product, for which the content creator receives a commission.
However, YouTuber MegaLag conducted an investigation into the company’s practices, and found that the affiliate tag attached to the content creator is replaced by PayPal’s own tracking tag after the customer uses Honey.
Put another way, the commission payment that would have gone to the affiliate content creator goes to PayPal instead if the customer uses the Honey extension before checkout.
After his findings, MegaLag reached out to Honey for a response, and this is what they said:
‘If Honey is activated and is the last program used while shopping on a site, it is likely Honey will receive credit for the purchase’.
The same thing also happens with Honey’s reward program, Honey Gold, which implements the same method.
‘I can’t see how it’s anything short of fraud’, says MegaLag.
Honey has yet to respond to the accusations.
